Launching at high RPMS
Saturday, March 20, 2004 7:47 PM
Let me start by saying I'm rather new at driving manual transmissions. My question is, how bad is it for me to launch my car from a dead stop at anywhere from 2500-4000 RPM? If it's really bad I'm going to stop doing it. I only do it occasionally, it's fun, but ofcourse I'm guesssing it's not good at all for the drivetrain etc. Thanks.

if it wheel hops its very bad

if the tires just spin its not as bad

it's always bad to drop the clutch. how bad?
Possible porblems occured by droping the clutch at high rpms:

1. Motor Mounts w/labor $500-800 (nothing is worse on these)
2. Fried clutch, burnt surface, replace cost w/labor $ 600-1000
3. Flywheel $ 600-1000 assuming it can not be resurfaced
4. Shift fork $ (a bunch)
5. Stripped teeth $ (a lot)
6. Tires $ (Much less)
7. Broken axles $ (a little less)

Never rev and drop unless somebody is paying you money to do so.
It's far too expensive in the not so long run.

4. Shift fork $ (a bunch)
we have hydraluic throw out bearings (ei no forking fork)

He didn't say he was "dropping the clutch", he just said he was launching at those rpm levels, there is a difference, but yes you can do damage but not if you occasionally do it, I agree its fun to launch high like your racing the strip and go up a few gears real quick for practice, but remember don't do it every time you leave a light, you could lose your clutch real fast doing that.....................

Oh and you can get new mount inserts from RkSport and another company (brain fart, sorry) that will cost you under 200 buks and you can install them in your driveway with some jack stands, plus they are performance mounts and will stiffen up the engine and make the car put more force to the ground, and thats good, but they do increase vibrations a bit, so if you like a quiet grandpa like feel in your car don't get them................so 1. on that list is slightly exagerated, sorry not being rude just throwing out random knowledge.
#1 might be exagerated, cuz the last time i checked prices was on a 90 galant, but it was only a year ago. they may have charged more cuz they knew how messy the campartment was by then.
if he's not matching the rpm of the engine/flywheel with that of the clutch it's dropping in my opinion. and if he's letting the cluch "catch up" by holding it in a little he'll be going through a lot of 2 and 3.

And how are we changing gears without a gear selector fork? are you talking about syncros? fork pushes the selector onto the gear; if the teeth are'nt lined up and you force it, it can bend, but it is unlikely. you would have to jam it pretty hard.

wheel spin is loss of traction in all casses anyway. if all you're trying to do is spin the wheels just put it in first, get off the clutch and push the gas to the floor--you're ripping and roaring.
To get more performance from your vehicle, learn to drive it better.

Ohhh yes my friend you will be able to, 4k burnouts in mine and rather than just dying out the rpms climb up to the rev limiter as the car starts moving forward. PLENTY of power for burnouts.

If you cant have fun whats the point. Yes i agree dropping the clutch at every light will be costly in the end but if you get that feeling that you need to do it. Just know that you will be spending cash later. Fun thing about breaking things is putting better @!#$ in after. Haha. Just be safe and if your new at driving stick learn to drive smooth before you learn to drive fast. And when dumping the clutch imho the worst that could happen is getting pulled over. Nothing like the embarrasment of doing dumb @!#$ and getting caught. Its alot cooler when you got mad traction and its all go and no show.

so what should you launch at when you are racing?

Launch at whatever gives you the best 60ft times. Start at 1000 then 1500 then 2000 then 2500 and so on,
Which ever gives you the best 60ft times is the one to choose

i launch from 4500 ive had the best launches with the least amount of hop at those high rpm's
