We are talking about the 2004 to 2005 Pontiac GTO, right? Because, it make a difference. An older '64 to '74 GTO, may not be in the best tune. Some actually made less that 250hp when new. The 2004 Pontiac GTO is one of the fastest GTOs with about 350hp, and is faster than most of the original GTOs('64 -74). The '04 GTO does outweigh the average J-body by nearly 900lbs.The 2004 GTO is car that can do a 1/4 mile in the 14.0-13.8sec range.
Still, j-bodies need about 240hp to just equal the 2004 GTO in a 1/4mile. The 2005 GTO is about 400hp,and runs low 13 sec. in the 1/4mile. A j-body needs about 270 hp to equal it. I not saying that a J-body can't beat a GTO, for less money, because it can.

You can buy a new J-body well equiped for about $17-18,000. Then add about $12, 000 in performance upgrades(brakes, suspension, engine upgrades, turbo or supercharger,or NOS). And for around 30,000 your J-body will equal or beat any GTO, and possible scare a few Vettes. But remember that the GTO is to the Sunfire , like the Corvette is to the Cavalier. The Older Big Brother. If the j-bodies are sport compact cars, then the GTO & Corvette are high performance cars. J-bodies are cars the deliver great fuel economy with good performance. Corvettes & GTOs deliver great performance & fair gas mileage. Personally I like J-bodies(own 1), and dream of owning a GTO & a Corvette.

If you were going to change everything out of the cavy, you should've just bought a baseline model for $10,700(US).
