When you shift into first try, pushing in the clutch, putting it in nuetral, let out the clutch, push clutch in and then put it in first. I strated doing that out of habit when I hit the stop lights on my way to work, it seems to keep the tranny shifting smooth at in town speed.
I have a problem with third gear. if I down shift into it, most of the time it will grind that gear. been doing it almost since I got the car.
1ecotec2beat, I agree with 03TypeZ. It sounds like that syncro is going out. How many miles are on that transmission? Do you shift particularly hard or without the clutch? That .853 reaction time could use some work, but that 60 foot time is awesome! Let me know how you are launching that Cavalier and what tires you are using. Do you drop the clutch and from what RPM? Are you slipping out the clutch? What RPM?

I had a problem with my dome lights when i first got my car. The darn things would stay on FOREVER even after you were driving. But i kept blowing the 10 amp fuse in there so i stuck a 15 amp in it and the dome light works like a pro and it shuts off when it supposed to and i havn't blown one since.

Not a very good idea. that circuit was only mean to handle up to x amps. if you put in an x+ amp fuse in it you run the possibility of burning up your wiring or component.

the only problem i have with fifth is the shifter itself. it has about 3/4 to an inch of lateral play. the dealer says it's a solid mounted plastic shifter with no adjustment

I'll tell ya that the shifter in my 04 is alot better than the one I had in my 93 Sunbird. That one was realy sloppy. If you did not @!#$ just right, you would miss 3rd alot. The shifter in the 04 is no BMW Z3, but still a hell of a good trany.

i got a prob with my 5th too, every time i go to shift into it (in normal driving) it would sound like its grinding as its going in, its a brand new 05' Sunfire, with only 10,000 on it, does anybody have any answers about what it is, and how do i fix it?

I've missed a few shifts going into 5th quickly, but it's usually pretty good if I'm deliberate about it.. Clutch, up, over, up, release clutch.

Since a stock Sunfire will hit the speed limiter before the rev limiter in 4th gear, there's never any reason to shift into 5th in a hurry.

my problem isnt a missed shift, its everytime when i go to shift into 5th it'll grind, i know how to drive a manual car ive been doing it all my life, but i think its the sync for 5th and rev. im not to shure though

Hi guys... and gals (this is the 21st cent. after all)

I am new here and by many accounts still young but i have lots of automotive experience and i hope i can be of much help here.

As for the the problems with getting the (think its the...) GETRAG 5sp that bolts to the ECO in the cavi's and sunfire's, that just the nature of the beast.

For the uninitiated snycros are engineered into the trans to make engagement of the gears easier while the trans is in motion as opposed to the old straight cut dog tooth trans of yesteryear, that whine like my ex girlfriend, that you had to play "grind it till ya find it" with.

With all manual trans both new and old at a stop they might not wanna shift into gear. Think about it if you come to a stop sign in third chances are when you go to first (after you stopped) the theeth of the engagement mechanisim might not line up perfectly. UH OH what ever shall i do. Simple prob simple solution let clutch out IN NEUTRAL and let the engine spin up the input shaft (even just a tiny bit). Remember the syncros help a MOVING transmission shift.

Hope i was some help,

Craig
