2003 Engine Turns over but dont start

Hi, I'm having an issue, came home from work, car started fine at work, went to start hour later, doesn't start, makes like a whirring sound, almost like timin I want to say, but I am not sure , any clues? its a 2003 2.2 ecotec. racking my brains here cant figure it out.....HELP PLEASE
