Got a new 2.4 vvt EcoTec, and it's just about 'worn in'. I plan a compression test, at home, soon, to use as a benchmark for future tests. What kind of readings should I expect, that is what should the numbers be? I know they should all be close in value.
They should all be within 25% of each other and no less than 100psi. I'd expect to see somewhere around 150 or higher though on a fresh engine. 1800-200 isnt uncommon.

Good news and bad news. All readings were around 175, which is about what my '96 2.2 was when new. I thought the higer compression 2.4 would've been more, but I could be wrong. Bad news is that my CEL is on. I guess the 'puter didn't like cranking the engine without a fuel pump OR disconnected plugs!! Got a fix for this? Could AutoZone's 'free computer scan' thing cleanly clear the code?
You pulled the plugs and did a compression test on a brand-new engine?!? And I thought I was bad...

For what it's worth, engine had about 1500 miles on it when tested. Two plugs also had too much gap...nice job, GM!
