hi guys

new to these forums, but since i did my ecotec swap I'm lookin to start upgrading my engine and I've already got the ball rolling towards my turbo set up

I'm looking to be boosting around 15psi and higher (don't worry my ass is covered in the strength department with supportive mods) but I was curious as to what is being done about the ignition

Coil on plug is a cool thing, but I don't think that the $30 upgraded springs from RKsport is going to cut it at higher boost levels where the air/fuel charge is starting to get really dense... and unfortunately it doesn't seem like anyone has a real solution for us yet.

So I was thinkin about doing a regular DIS set up just like on the 2200 (in fact, I'd use the same MSD coils I saved from my old OHV) and use those to spark up the eco.

anyone see any disadvantages to this? I did a little bit of research but didn't turn up much... which is easier to upgrade for performance(i believe DIS)?

what's the limit of the stock ignition with say, the rksport springs in it boost / hp wise)

What FMU are you using? I'm in the middle of an Eco swap myself and looking for a viable alternative to the MSD cam sinc distributor, as it creates a packaging problem for my application...

if fuel is a problem, ecotec ECUs like to adapt out fuel on some 03, and all 04-05 ecu. They were programmed without an open loop at WOT.

if you have an 02 ecu or get lucky with an 03 you won't have the issue at all.

a mechanical FMU will not solve fuel problems if you're 04-05 ecu at all. In order to solve that prob I'm using megasquirt

it removes the ecu from the injector calcuations all together and gives you total control over what your air fuel ratio is.

if you try the FMU, the computer will adapt out the extra fuel pressure with shorter pulsewidth and you'll always end up with a 14.7:1 air fuel ratio.. not even the Hahn port fueler can beat it. They reflashed a privateer car with the 03 ecu programming to get rid of the non open loop programming.

So I'm using MS to control my pulsewidth and I'm going to use a 'vette AFPR

I'm lookin to push about 15psi daily and I kind of remember reading in a few differ places that people have a lot of misfire at that boost level.

but if nobody knows for sure I guess only time will tell...

But instead of the MSD sync distrubor you can do a DIS conversion using coil packs. The Z24 guys do it all the time, and you can keep your power steering. this is what i plan on doing if I have problems with misfire at higher boost

Any info/pics on the DIS conversion you speak of? I was wondering about something like that...as well as fabbing up an aftermarket crank trigger. I'm working around a FAST efi ecm (pre-XFI unit), so I'm not tied to the stock ecm if I wanna throw some cams or throttle body at it...
