Hey guys, I've heard of a few people dropping a couple tenths at the track with a high flow muffler or cat-back exhaust. This leads me to believe that the stock muffler is very restrictive so what about chopping it off? Will it be crazy loud or louder but not to bad? Keep in mind I don't mind a loud exhaust. Any other cons besides the extra volume? Let me know what u guys think.
Uhhhhhhh..........????? sure if u want to sound like a civic
!!!
well yeah ...?..to start off its illegal to not have a muffler...and it will sound like you are running a dirt-bike motor
I'm more interested in HP then sound. I knew before getting this car it wasn't going to sound like the great american V8. As far as being illegal, I was under the impression u only need one of the car is too loud without one. The SRT-4 doesn't come with mufflers from the factory.
Thats true..but thats from the factory...cavaliers come with a muffler from the factory..the cop would probably notice..besides that would be hell on your ears every time you drive it trust me..if you really want to do that just buy an exhaust cut-out..they are like 20$ and you can just plug it up when you dont need it open
Itislouder but not extremely loud, and it does sound sorta like an import but then again so does my magnaflow. I just a cat and resonator for about 2 months, the I finally got around to putting my Muffler on. Not bad, lost alot of low end, but gained some top end. My advice not a good Idea because the loss of backpressure cause your fuel to be pulled out of your cylinder before it combusts fully, causing you to run lean so your computer will dump more into the engine = crappy gas mileage, and the straight pipe isn't good for your valves. I actually felt more of a power increase going with a performance muffler than the open exhaust, mainly because this motor has little low end torque and the loss of backpressure killed what little torque there was.
now if it was a turbo'd car........thats another story.....
Well figured I'd try it and see what happened. The sound/tone isn't too bad, but it's way too loud. I'd end up getting a ticket from every cop I passed. As far as the performance...feels like I lost 10-15 HP. I can't believe these cars are so sensitive, stock muffler is too restrictive, no muffler is to free flowing...ugh. Well I'm gonna try and split the difference with a performance muffler and see how that goes.
ooo come on its not that loud, i ran mine like that for a whole summer and i know somebody else that is running no muffler. i have heard a few with aftermarket mufflers on them and i didnt think it was that much more quiet, just sounded worse IMO.
i have a 2 1/2 exhaust on mine from the turbo back with no muffler, its loud when i get on eit, but i never got a ticket for it.
^^ turbo muffles the sound a little bit with out it its way louder
^^ true, but with the stock set up it still wasnt that loud
I have 2.5" cat-back on my ION, all mandrel + resonator + strait through muffler = a very decent sounding car. Unless it is a race engine tuned to operate with less than normal exhaust backpressure, it will HARM performace.
no muffler = better high rpm power, worse low end torque. cat-backs are usually a good mix between the 2.
i have a titanium fiberglass packed muffler off ebay and its free flow on my stock exhaust.... i gained hp on my '04 sunfire........ i didn't lose.. i gained hp......now all i need is a rear mount turbo and i will kick all the imports to an early grave
set the example, never let the example set you.
i have no cat and no resonator and a 21/4 catback exhaust with a straight thru muffler and it is loud
its a cavalier i should get 2 cars and the hit
I have found the cherry bomb supreme turbo to be perfect. It is stock quiet with normal driving , but sporty sounding when I get on it or down-gear. I lost nothing and gained a lot after 4000 rpm . I used to shift at 5600 because it did not want to rev. Now I shift at 6000. I gained 2 mph in the quarter mile@89mph with my otherwise stock 04 cavalier 5 speed.
