I just replaced the timing chain and counterbalance chain on my 02 sunfire gt. I was wondering what the purpose of the counterbalance is for. I noticed the markings on the exhaust and intake idler pulleys and was wondering why they need to be aligned with the crank.
there are 2 balance shafts. One for the exhaust side and one for the intake side. They are counterbalances for engine vibrations to help it run smoother from the drivers seat.
If the marks are not lined up properly, you will notice vibrations.
Alright, cool. I did have them lined up when I installed them, I was just trying to figure out the mechanics of the engine. I noticed when turning them, it was very simple and thought there couldn't be any way that it had something to do with the balancing of the engine. do you know of a website that has a cutaway view of the engine that I can see how it operates.
