What's in a name ?
Tuesday, June 07, 2005 9:53 PM
Can someone please help me understand the logic behind the usage of the name Ecotech ? Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming the usage of 2.2s and 2.4s as power plants, but couldn't they at lease change the name ? Frankly, the name Ecotech sucks! If you want to break it apart, the prefix "Eco" conjures the image of being environmentally friendly and fuel efficient. On the other hand, the sufix "tech" just screams computer nerd. That's why I have a hard to beleving this engine to be as potent as GM claims it to be.

Well it seems you have just answered your own question. Ecotec, to mean easy on emissions, and friendly to the environment. GM claims that the ecotec is the best at gas economy and emissions engine out as of now. Perhaps thats where the tech comes in.

Besides who cares what it's called,? It's a 4 cylinder with the capabilty of being anywhere from 140hp to 650hp. I'll call an engine crap if thats it's name, if I can make it perform with those numbers.

What does a name have to do with believing in the performance aspect of an engine?

If you don't believe those numbers read this, if you can download it. (28mb)

Don't take this personally or in offense, but perhaps reading about the engine before posting idiotic questions would be a good idea.

To me, the suffix " tech" means many things, none of those have anything to do with a computer. Tech was short for technician, one who specialized in their field. Nerd and geek, I would associate with computer pros. Many of those guys would qualify as technicians too but they prefer more specific labels

i have even seen the ecotec push upwards of over 1000 ponies and blow away just about everything it raced. no it wasn't a street car at all, but it was still the ecotec powerplant.

Ecotec

Lets break it down

Eco = Economy = Inexpensive Compact
Tec = Technology = More HP per Gallon = Sporty

Wait a minute maybe they should of called it The Sporty-compact engine series,
Sport Compact for short, oh that describes the segment the engine was built for.

I like the name it is simple makes sense and makes it easy to figure out what may or may not bolt on for more power.

Oh and BTW stop thinking that some how being enviro-friendly is a bad thing when it comes to performance vehicles the '80 are over and clean economical power is definitely "IN".

D-TECs arent ECOTECs or even rebadged ECOTECs, Even many of the euro ECOTECs arent related to our ECO's.
