I recently bought a 07 cobalt 2.2L for a daily driver/ commuter car. I hope to keep the car for a long time and put a ton of miles on. My question is how many miles are on your car and what major issues have you had?
I've seen reports of Ecotecs with 150Kmi+ on them, and still running like new, leak free, etc. The Ecotec/4T45E are a well proven drivetrain. GM's little gem as far as I am concerned.

IF you give your car its regular maintenance it will be fine..... I have seen a lot of power steering racks leaking and clunks in the steering I shafts.... Oh and there is a rear main leak i have seen more than a couple times on the l61 but if you have a warranty don't worry.......
GM is doing a 100k power train warranty, so I figure it should be good for at least that. Do the new Cobalts have power steering fluid? I thought it was an electric power steering system.
I have 104,XXX kms on my eco, only problem thus far is the water pump and plugs

i just hit 140,000 on my 03 cav and i beat the @!#$ outa it, still running fine although i do change the oil every 3g
167,000 on my ecotec Grand am since 02...went thru 3 motors and 4 tyranny's...im rokin most old school engineering...i will say don't overheat the getrag...since most models doesn't have a trans oil cooler the oil tends to get hot and you burn out syncros....as for the motors the original had a small leak that GM could not find....the other one I blew...so atm im rokin an 05 sunfire ecotec and a 06 ion trans....i won a lemon case on my GA because since i bought the car with 11 miles on it the syncros went like every 2k...until basically my waranty ran out....im firmly convinced it was the quality of the mechanics that was blowing the syncro's out on my car....one time i got it back....luckly changed my brakes that day cause all 4 of my sub frame bolts were hanging out...and a nother time my flywheel bolts came loose...so i blame all my problems on the crappy mechanics at the Outten dealer in Hamburg near where i live....but ever since my warranty ran out and ive been doing my own work...i have had no problems....but you really wanna watch your heat on your trans...the syncros like to go...since about 60k till 167k no probs....and i like to claim that i have the most miles on an Ecotec since 02....any one wanna step up and claim #1....cause i am...
167,000 on an Ecotec since 02
Hey Gang, i have a question and i posted it in the maintenance forum as well but maybe someone here can help me, i have a 04 cavy 2.2 eco 4 speed automatic 100,000 miles on it not a problem one thus far still going strong as ever. My Question is should i change the timing chain between now and 150,000 miles or is it safe to wait. Also someone said doing the timing chain would run me close to $2,000 is that really right you could buy a new engine for that much couldn't you .
mtpockets you mention the 4t45e drivetrain, what about the 4t40e is that a great drivetrain as well. Also how long has the 4t40e been around is that a new drivetrain or has that been around since the late 80's early 90's.
i have 120k on a 2003 sunfire. I had to change the fuel pump, water pump, and plugs
103,150 on my 04 Ls Sedan 2.2 eco 4 speed auto, only thing recently was the brakes which cost me a ton because the back ones wound up being oversized.
112,000 on my 04 Ls Sedan 2.2 eco.
I am getting my aveo 1.6 eco monster today. Yea Laugh but I drive 600 miles to and from work a week. 30,000 plus a year. My 97 cavalier just bit the dust with 391000 miles. 280,000 on the second engine. Of course they were not eco. I am buying my son a 2006 cobalt.
last car was an 03 sunfire with l61 eco, totaled the car with 185000 on it internals of engine were never touched, my current car is an 03 sunfire also with an l61 eco has 195000 on it and again internals were never touched. so if longevity is your concern dont let it be, both cars were driven daily at around 40k miles a year. 2 things to remember, they are 10:1 compression engines, 92 octane required, and synthetic oil too cast iron cams in an aluminum head with no bearing. keep the oil changed and it will go a long time
