Ecotec family

The Holden built ecotec also comes in Suzuki, Deawoo, Buick and Chevrolet cars in different parts of the world and is sold as a D-tec to denote it comes in a GM Deawoo car.

I ran a search of the site and it seems there is no mention of this here.

That's cause for the most part, the users on this forum are from North America and deal with the ECOTEC engines from North American manufactured vehicles.

If you want more information on those vehicles, read this:

Holden is in relations to dodge/Mits/Merc. Ecotec is a modified 16 valve Saab engine, Their in so many cars becouse it's cheeper manufacture, with that dumb foam casting stuff. I have also a 04 Suzuki Aerio with a 2.3l and has some relationship becouse of the fact it has a 16 valves and a timing chain, but thats about it.

The ECOTECS we know and love here in North America are always labeled ECOTEC and are part of the L850 and L880 engine family. The D-TEC and E-TEC engines are in no way related other than they are 4 cylinder GM engines.

Holden and other divisions even offer V-6 ECOTECs. ECOTEC is just a brand name, like VORTEC is for truck engines(vortecs range from v8' to v6's to straight 6's, 5's and 4's they share only a name.

Yup, it's amazing the misinformation you hear in regards to the Ecotec. I've heard sales people and techs claim they are made by Toyota, Isuzu, Suzuki, you name it! I gotta bite my tongue every time. The 2.2L is made in Tonawanda NY, about 25mi from where I live. The GM Atlas/Vortec 4,5 and 6cyl engines are loosely related to the Ecotec in that they share some of the same valvetrain components.

MT, while the Atlas share its Inline DOHC architecture style with the ECOs, you cant swap any parts between the two.(the valves are the only part with any notable similarity since they have the same head diameter and cut, but the stem is a different length. nothing else is really even that close )

Andrew, as I stated Vortec (no "H") is a BRAND NAME that GM Powertrain uses for its gasoline truck/marine/industrial engine. Its not just the 4.3L head. Secondly I am aware of the 496/8.1L you mentioned, and it doesnt suck, its a relative of the original MarkIV big block that came to life in 1965, and is the engine family with the longest continuous run still in use in new vehicles. You also need to hold back on the flaming, youve stated in another thread that just because a guy stripped threads he shouldnt be working on his own stuff because he doesnt know what he's doing, and here you assume that out of this entire forum you're the only that is aware of the 8.1L Vortec, which is odd considering you yourself are confused as to what Vortec even represents.

Thanks for clarifying the Ecotec/Atlas similarities GMT. Don't mean to go OT, but what about the hydraulic lash adjusters? Are they the same between the Eco and Atlas? I knew the valves, cams, etc were not interchangeable, but thought the HLA's and rockers/followers were the same,
