The factory airbox for the saturn L series is restrictive due to a tuning horn and limited size pipe to feed air in I have modified mine in order to achieve better performance the photos that follow should explain things. I did not want a loud intake so I went this route.
the stock outlet necks down from 2 1/2 inch to just 1 3/4 inch
this is what i did to it
and the air feeds are too small so I swapped them for 3inch ones

Great! Get a "K&N" drop-in air filter (adds a bit of noise though)
P.S. Get an air intake, you'll love it
it's just my opinion
Or you could remove the tube from the air box. Measure the diameter of the tube. Then go find a K&N cone filter to fit on it, and clamp it on to the tube.
I had the k&n cone filter and to be honest it was annoying I don't want my wagon sounding like joe ricer. On a little car that sound fits but on a big black sinister car like mine it is just wrong. I am still looking for more power for my wagon but not at the expense of sounding rediculous. I will be installing a drop in K&N or somesuch and I will be doing a 2 1/4 cat back exhaust (with quiet mufflers) and nice tastefull tips.
