Need suggestions for a forced induction setup....
Monday, May 09, 2005 7:24 PM
03 ION....
its getting a PnP Eaton M90... i want to retain the stock ecm.... i need suggestions on the following parts...

Injectors- Bosch 36lbs? whats the flow rate of the stock injectors?
Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator- accel? is there a drop in?
Fuel Pump- Walbro 255lph dropin? venom inline?
Ignition system- will an MSD DIS-2 programmable work with the stock ecm?

BTW... Its getting a cartech fmu, staged alcohol injection, intercooler, Eaton m90, im porting the exhaust manifold (maybe going to header), 9:1 custom forged pistons and either using the stock intake or fabbing a new one. Shooting for 250+ hp

any other suggestions would are welcome.

You guys seem to be the most knowledgable on the net about this kind of stuff so i figured id ask. thanx again.

Personally, I'd stay away from the FMU. Get piggyback fuel controller instead. You'll be a lot happier and the car will run a lot better. It's the 21st century, cars should be tuned with computers, not by FMUs.

36 lb injectors may be a little on the small side. I'd get something a little bigger and adjust the base fuel presure. Try this : RC Engineering

I'm a fan of the Walbro, even though its more a PITA to install. Completely replacing the stock fuel pump is also just the right way to do it

Give MSD a call. They're usually pretty helpful and probably already know what would be needed for the Ecotec.

Alcohol injection may not be nessecary seeing as you're running an intercooler and MSD box. With properly tuned fuel and timing you should never detonate anywhere near 250hp.

If you're going through all this trouble, why not get a turbo instead. It's more effiecent and you'll make more power. Sure the low end isn't as nice, but turbo lag has gotten a lot better with current technology.

how much boost are you going to be running? and why are you running a roots blower?

i'm not a big fan of piggyback systems and i like to do stuff the oldschool way, fmu's are easy as hell to tune so no worries there. just out of curiosity, who makes a good piggyback for these?

im running 36lbers on my beretta and that thing is right around 300hp. you just get the on rail afpr to adjust base fuel pressure and use the fmu to boost it. do these use high impedance injectors?

walbro is my choice too.

the dis-2 should work from what i hear, i just gotta figure out where to wire it to.

alcohol injection is just an added safety precaution. im running an msd box, alcohol injection, cold ass plugs and lower compression pistons to keep detonation at bay. plus having a really cold air charge is nice.

the reason why im goin with an eaton is cuz i can get em for $35-50 a piece . plus its less piping and i can always strap an m112 on there or go turbo later on and its cheaper for me in the long run. im gonna be running around 10-12 lbs of boost. not too bad for straight off the line power all the way thru.

Most piggy backs are marketed to the ricers, but theres no reason why they shouldn't work for the Ecotec. Apexi makes a nice one, the Super AFC or something like that. Yeah, it's a bit trickier then an FMU to set up and tune, but it's worth it in the long run IMHO.

If you're gonna stick with the FMU, 36lb injectors will work just fine because the fuel rail pressure will wind up being so much higher then if using a piggy back.

I've honestly alway been a fan of alcohol injection. It is a nice added safety feature for those hot summer days, but it's not something that should be depended on to run properly. Plus it helps steam clean your intake.

Not too sure if the Ecotec uses high or low impedance injectors. Grab a multimeter a measure the resistance across it. Above 12 Ohms its high, below 3 Ohms is low.

You can't beat a supercharger for that price. Blowers do have this nice linear pull all through the power band, but I can't help but love the exponential kick of a turbo. I'm just bias I guess

Eco injectors are high impedence. A low cost alternative is ford red top injectors. I just bought 30lb and there good for a little over 200hp. only $125 Or you can get ford green top injectors 42lb for about $180

FPR acell # 74566 is a direct replacement. $105

Keep the fmu and add a safc2 they work together. safc dosent know how much boost your making. safc adjusts the fuel depending on your RPM.

getting msd to work on an eco is one of thoes things "somebodys friend heard of this guy that got it to work on his cousins eco" Ive never seen it installed on an eco, but that dosent mean it cant be done.

ya, alcohol injection is a nice little added protection. thats why im runnin it .

the next quad 4 im gonna build is gonna be an all out 400+hp turbo race block for street use .

damn, i found a set of 42lbers on ebay for like $75 shipped, but i didnt know if they'd work, oh well.

the msd box shouldnt be that bad, i just gotta figure out what does what on the coil cover. u should be able to remove the casing around the coils and all u gotta do is find the ground for both coils and figure out which trigger is which. i gotta rip one apart and see for sure.

thanx guys. you've been by far the most informative eco board ive been to. keep the suggestions and comments coming, i need some more ideas.

I just realized you have an ion not a jbody. The fuel rails on the jbodys changed from 02 to 03. Im not sure how you can check to see which style fuel rail you have. The 03+ jbodys can use the ford injectors. The 02 jbodys can use the sabb turbo injectors. I dont know how to tell the differnece between the two. You probally have an 03 style rail but I wouldnt go buying parts based on my "probally"

The top injector in the pic in the link is an 03+ style rail injector if that helps.
